These days free massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) have become extremely popular. For example, World of Warcraft (WoW) by Blizzard has players in the millions who all pay a monthly membership fee just to play that online game. Many other games like WoW are called WoW clones because they are very similar to Blizzard’s bestselling game. The difference is that these so-called WoW clones are free to play.

What exactly is a WoW clone? There is no exact definition of the term but it is commonly used by people to refer to a game that has a lot of similarities to World of Warcraft. Generally these could be similarities in graphics, gameplay and user interface. While many use this term in a negative way, others simply use it to describe a game that players of Warcraft might enjoy playing.

Examples of these include the ever-popular Runes of Magic, Talisman Online and 4story. They all are similar games but with their particular flavor that is unique to each.

Another thing they all have in common is that they are all completely and forever free to download and free to play. Why is it that WoW is p2p but other MMOGs that are very alike are f2p? It all boils down to the economics of the MMORPGs. While the top pay to play games can earn their developers tons of money, those that are not quite as popular will find it hard, if not impossible, to compete with established games and gaming companies that have multi-million budgets. By using the free to play model many MMORPGs can attract players who would not otherwise have played their game.
